Course descriptionInequalities in health are observable among groups of the population whether categorised by class, occupation, income, gender or ethnicity and reflect persistent social and economic deprivation. Theories of social stratification provide explanations of patterned and persistent inequalities. This course will provide an introduction to concepts and theories of social stratification and to the evaluation from a public health perspective of public policies that address social inequalities.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to:-
1) Critically examine key contemporary debates regarding the social determinants of health.
2) Understand and critically appraise theories of social stratification.
3) Interpret data on global health inequality and on social and economic inequalities.
4) Apply core concepts and perspectives from social science to public health questions
5) Evaluate the public health implications of policies that seek to address social inequalities.
