Course descriptionThis is an option course for the MSc Dementia: International Experience, Policy and Practice. It is also available as a standalone CPD course.

This course will be delivered entirely online.

The course aims to support students to develop an enhanced understanding of dementia in people with an intellectual disability. It will include international perspectives on research, policy and practice.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate:

A critical understanding of the historical context of people with an intellectual disability.

An appreciation of the similarities and differences in dementia and dementia care experienced by people with an intellectual disability and by the general population.

An analysis of models of care for people with an intellectual disability and dementia.

An appreciation of research, policy and practical evidence of support for people with an intellectual disability and dementia, with an awareness of gaps in literature.
Assessment Information
Case study report. Students will develop a care and support system based on a real example. They will contribute to this weekly based on their learning and reading. A template will be provided for the case report although students have the flexibility to add additional detail. Content will include text, reflection, hyperlinks and future planning information based on policy and good practice guidance. 50%

An end of course essay, 2000 - 2500 words 50%
