| Course description | Application of descriptive grammatical and textual analysis to fictional texts in English; the linguistic nature and status of fiction; differences between fictional and factual text; the linguistic construction of point of view and narrative voice; cognitive approaches to fiction; interaction between narrative and dialogue in fiction; stylistic analysis of passages from selected major novels. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will have:
- a basic grasp of methods of stylistic analysis of fiction;
- developed knowledge of relevant grammatical structures;
- come to an understanding of differences between factual and fictional text;
- an understanding of the construction of point of view;
- an appreciation of developments associated with the so-called 'cognitive turn' in stylistics;
- an awareness of the interaction between narrative and dialogue in fictional text. |
Assessment Information
(1) Coursework providing 50% of the final mark.
(2) A two-hour written examination providing 50% of the final mark. |
