Course descriptionThis course involves the study of the English Language between 1700 and 1900, emphasising changes in pronunciation and syntax and the relationship of these to social, gender and class factors There will be a study of English Dictionary making in the period and a summary of the evolution of the description of grammatical categories.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will have detailed knowledge of diachronic change as it relates to sociology. They will also have detailed insights into processes of dictionary-making as well as a grounding in the methodology and principles which lie behind the construction of grammatical categories. Students should be able to progress to independent research in this subject.
Assessment Information
1. Coursework providing 50% of the final mark.
2. A two-hour written examinaton providing 50% of the final mark.
