Course descriptionThis course aims to provide an introduction to research skills relevant to postgraduate work. Topics centre around research practices, linguistic argumentation and dissertation preparation. The goal of the course is to equip students with both practical tools and guiding principles for issues like the identification of a research question, the use of relevant literature and the collection and analysis of data.

Formative feedback available;
- Course Organiser will use part of the week 2 or week 3 lectures to discuss any concerns with the previous weeks participation so that students can adjust accordingly.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To acquire research skills for postgraduate work in Linguistics and English Language.
Assessment Information
Several short assignments related to linguistic argumentation, data analysis and dissertation preparation.

The course is assessed as pass/fail with coursework that students bring to class for discussion and assessment together (e.g., questions from readings and practice at writing abstracts). A final passing mark will be based on participation in more than half of the assignments.

The Course Organiser will comment on assignments and hand them back in class by the following week.
