This course introduces students to the visual interpretation of themes and texts through drawing and mixed media. During the course students will have the opportunity to explore narrative illustration and, based on literary sources, investigate how to tell a story through images. Students will be taken through a series of illustration briefs which explore the planning and development stages of illustration as well as the context. This will lead to the students¿ own visual interpretation to a given or chosen text to create a more ambitious outcome.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. By the end of the course, through attending classes and engaging in directed and independent study, students should be able to:

RESEARCH
investigate aspects of historical and contemporary illustration and subject matter through a range of approaches to design research

2. PRACTICE
develop a personal visual language by exploring process and materials in creative responses to illustration briefs

3. PRESENT
present resolved studio work in an appropriate form demonstrating a range of ideas, storyboarding and development.
Assessment Information
The course will be assessed by the submission of a portfolio of visual design works and supporting materials within the discipline studied. This will include a selection of resolved design works, preparatory studies, visual research and evidence of a contextual awareness through a completed sketchbook and/or visual journal. The work must be presented in a clear and professional manner appropriate to the discipline. The submission should include work undertaken within the class as well as directed and independent study out with the class.

Typically, this will comprise:
Class Contact hours: 27.5 (work students do during the class)
Directed hours: 27.5 (work your tutor has set students to do after the class teaching is complete)
Independent Study Hours: 45 (work students set themselves to do, relevant to the discipline studied)

The combined submission will be assessed against the three learning outcomes for this course. These are equally weighted and each will be given a percentage grade. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 30% in each learning outcome and an overall combined mark of 40% minimum.
