This course introduces the moving image for students and artists interested in developing creative ideas with video. The focus will be on the fundamentals of the moving image and time-based media, together with digital video editing. The course covers developing concepts for moving image work using storyboarding, capturing and importing video, creating a rough-cut edit, fine-tuning the edit, working with effects and transitions, working with sound, and exporting a short video piece for DVD. Students will also have the opportunity to view and discuss a range of contemporary artists¿ video and short films. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. By the end of the course, through attending classes and engaging in directed and independent study, students should be able to:
RESEARCH
research, plan and storyboard ideas for a range of short video works which consider a range of contemporary video practice in art and design
2. PRACTICE
develop their own creative approaches to taking, editing and presenting video showing an understanding of how to use effects, transitions and sound to create a considered short video piece for DVD;
3. PRESENT
Present a final edited digital video sequence which has considered both context and impact.

Assessment Information
The course will be assessed by the submission of a 1-3 minute video piece on DVD, together with supporting materials. This will include appropriate visual research and evidence of a contextual awareness through a completed sketchbook and/or visual journal. The work must be presented in a clear and professional manner appropriate to the discipline. The submission should include work undertaken within the class as well as directed and independent study out with the class.
Typically, this will comprise:
Class Contact hours: 27.5 (work students do during the class)
Directed hours: 27.5 (work your tutor has set students to do after the class teaching is complete)
Independent Study Hours: 45 (work students set themselves to do, relevant to the discipline studied)
The combined submission will be assessed against the three learning outcomes for this course. These are equally weighted and each will be given a percentage grade. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 30% in each learning outcome and an overall combined mark of 40% minimum.
