| Course description | This is a for-credit course offered by the Office of Lifelong Learning (OLL); only students registered with OLL should be enrolled.
Sport is important in the life of the Scottish nation and this course will provide an understanding of continuity and change from the 19th to the 21st century. Fair play, the competitiveness of sportspersons, and sporting events which reflect tradition nationally and locally will be among the subjects under discussion.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
¿ identify the main areas of sporting culture and account for the importance of local as well as national sporting identity;
¿ evaluate sport through the study and use of a variety of written and visual sources;
¿ analyse how developments and trends in sport reflect changes in society;
¿ demonstrate the above learning outcomes through the assessment.

1. Introduction to the social history of sport in Scotland ¿ the ethics of ¿fair play¿ in amateur sport.
2. Sport as it relates to identity and ethnicity ¿ Highland Games.
3. Golf ¿ inclusive and exclusive.
4. Football ¿ faith, hope and bigotry.
5. Sportsnews ¿ reporting sport in the media.
6. Sportswomen ¿ establishing a feminine identity on the court, track and links.
7. The ethics of gambling ¿ on sportspersons and animals.
8. Curling ¿ the democratic nature of the ¿roaring¿ game.
9. Sport as a business ¿ commercialism and professionalism.
10. Sport for the future ¿ children and participation.
