Course description | Modernism and the Cinema is designed to introduce students to the theories and practices of filmic modernism. The course will investigate the ways in which modernist filmmakers sought to overturn the realist and naturalistic style of Hollywood. Some of the major filmmakers to be discussed include Alain Resnais, Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman and Andrei Tarkovsky. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Understand the importance of modernism in film and its wide-ranging influence.
- Describe the development of modernist cinema.
- Explain the significance of individual modernist films and their relation to others.
