Course descriptionThis course will introduce MATLABŪ, a software package for numerical computing and programming, and will describe the design and analysis of a range of simple machine elements. The aim of the course is to develop design skills and be able to use a software package such MATLABŪ for the design and optimisation of engineering problems. Design methods, relevant codes and standards will be discussed, and these will be applied in progressively more challenging tutorial problems as well as in two design projects.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Mechanical Engineering 1 (MECE08007) OR Civil Engineering 1 (CIVE08001) OR Chemical Engineering 1 (CHEE08001) OR ( Physics 1A: Foundations (PHYS08016) AND Physics 1B: The Stuff of the Universe (PHYS08017)) OR ( Chemistry 1A (CHEM08016) AND Chemistry 1B (CHEM08017))

On completion of the course, students should be able to:
1. Be competent in using the most common features of MATLABŪ
2. Understand how to use MATLABŪ to solve engineering problems
3. Calculate the centroid of a bolt group
4. Design an eccentrically loaded shear joint
5. Design a pin jointed structure for strength
6. Choose a material for a specific design
7. Choose appropriate Factors of Safety
8. Design a shaft under axial, bending and torsional loading
9. Appreciate ASME shaft design data
10. Design radial clutches and drum brakes
11. Design axial clutches and disc brakes
12. Design flywheels for inertia considerations
