| Course description | The course will consider, what is a curriculum, how is it created and what impact it has on students, institutions and professional development in the undergraduate and postgraduate phases.
The course will refer to evidence in the literature and case studies illustrating issues around curriculum planning, particularly with respect to:
- Philosophy, policy and practice.
- The definition of the clinical practitioner.
- Recommendations and guidelines with international status, examples include the World Health Organisation, and the European Tuning Projects.
- Recommendations and guidelines at national level, examples include the General Medical Council, Royal Colleges, "Scottish Doctor Project" and government agencies.
- The explicit and hidden curriculum and the notion of constructive alignement
The course will also explore the limitations of competency-based programmes and will ask participants to consider the difference between competency, capability and performance in medical practice.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After completing the MSc in Clinical Education, an individual will have sufficient knowledge to:
- Describe and discuss contemporary theories and issues in Clinical Education, at a national and international level.
- Recognise, evaluate and make an appropriate response to the governance and policy associated with Clinical Education.
- Exercise a critical appraisal of situations and circumstances pertaining to Clinical Education.
- Recognise, reflect upon and respond to their own educational needs and the needs of others.
- Take a lead responsibility in Clinical Education within their own professional area.

| An on-line, virtual, or E-learning environment has been chosen for the delivery of all courses on the MSc programme. Teaching, learning and assessment takes place in an electronic environment known as the Forth Suite.
