Course descriptionAn introduction to the basic precepts underpinning professionalism and the ethical and legal frameworks within which nursing operates. The primacy of such professional values and communication and interpersonal skills is explored in depth. The workings of the current NHS are identified and the notions of leadership, management and inter-professional teamwork are introduced with a focus on communication.

The focus of this first year course is upon the understanding and acquisition of the skills and attributes of a professional nurse who works with integrity within the professional ethical code and the prevailing legal framework to deliver safe, effective, compassionate, person-centred care. Students are introduced to issues such as confidentiality, data protection, dignity and respect.

Understand the concept of professionalism and what it means to hold professional values as a professional nurse

Have gained an understanding of what professionalism is and how it can be developed

Have an increased awareness of how personal and professional values shape our behaviour

Have explored what is meant by legal, ethical, clinical and social competence in relation to professionalism

Have acquired basic communication and interpersonal knowledge and skills

Have gained an appreciation of the role and importance of the NHS

Have familiarised themselves with The Code: standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives (NMC, 2008)

Have gained an understanding of the recognised professional, ethical and legal frame works which shape their practice with particular regard for the NMC

Have gained an appreciation of leadership and what it means to work in a team
Assessment Information
A one hour examination consisting of one 30 minute required short answer question and two 45 minute questions which must be answered from a choice of five questions. Weighting 100%.
