Course descriptionThe aim of this 20-hour course is to provide students with opportunities to consider some current debates and developments in the field of mental health care. These debates and developments will be construed particularly in relation to mental health nursing, and especially, where relevant, Community Psychiatric Nursing. Topics which may be addressed include: - frameworks for understanding mental health and illness, and implications for work in the field; - issues of knowledge, power and moral order in mental health care; - accountability for practice; - debate on 'evidence-based practice'; - multi-disciplinary care and implications for professional development; - policy on community care and implications for mental health nursing practice - disputes about the appropriate focus for work and services in the field of mental health care; - users' and carers' roles in mental health care; - culturally-appropriate mental health care; - prospects for holistic care; - the relationship between policy and research in this field.
