Course description**Online Distance Learning Course**

Many drugs designed in the laboratory fail in clinical trials. To understand why, students need a knowledge of pharmacokinetics, for which an appreciation of biological kinetics is required. In addition more complex modelling of drug targets as systems of interacting molecules is emerging. Other courses in the MSc require a knowledge of elementary kinetics. This course is designed to introduce these concepts.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able to:

- Demonstrate an appreciation of biological time scales at the molecular level;

- Show advanced knowledge of the factors that affect molecular time scales;

- Appreciate how to extract first order association/dissociation constants and half-lives from experimental data;

- Appreciate the scale of diffusion-limited processes and how to show that they are so;

- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of enzyme kinetics and derivation and manipulation of attendant equations.
Assessment Information
50% = Group Assessment (including maximum 20% variation for Peer Assessment of contribution)

50% = Electronic Portfolio (comprising of learning log and contribution to skills profile)
