Course descriptionThe dissertation is an integral component of the taught MSc degree programme, The Second World War in Europe (History). It will cover a subject chosen by the student, advised by a relevant member of staff and the programme director. The subject will relate to one or more of the four courses taken by each student: Invasion, occupation, collaboration, resistance; Home fronts: belligerents (excluding Britain) and neutrals; Britain at war; Exploitation, expulsions, extermination. Students will be encouraged to consider possible dissertation subjects from the middle of the first semester, and will make a final choice during the second semester. The main work of the dissertation will take place after the end of the second semester.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will acquire a thorough and detailed knowledge of the subject matter of their dissertation. They will be encouraged to take the initiative in choosing and conceiving their project. They will learn to design and plan a substantial project, largely independently but with the guidance and advice of a supervisor. Writing the dissertation will improve both their problem-solving and their written skills.
