Course descriptionThis option considers gender relations and the position of women in selected European countries in the era of the two world wars. The countries to be studies include Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the USSR. Particular attention will be devoted to a)the impact of the two world wars and economic depression on gender roles, and b) the differences and similarities in terms of both policy and experience between democracies and dictatorships and between countries where women had political rights and where they did not.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will acquire a detailed knowledge of the legal, political, economic and social position of women, including their status and opportunities vis-a-vis those of men. They will learn to make comparisons across a range of policies and societies at different stages of development. They will improve their written, oral and analytical skills, and they will learn to work as members of a team.
