Course descriptionStudents will write an assignment of 3,000 words presenting either a preliminary report on the proposed dissertation, or a free-standing essay addressing a historical topic which needs to be understood in more detail in preparation for the dissertation. It should use both primary and secondary sources.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will acquire:
- A specialised knowledge and understanding of their chosen area of history;
- An understanding of the interaction between historical sources and explanation;
- The ability to formulate a plan of research;
- The ability to formulate and test hypotheses.

Assessed within the context of the three essays required under the coursework and dissertation mode of the MSc by Research in Scottish History.
