Course descriptionThe course will provide students with an understanding of how HPC is used in the real world, and introduce them to a number of concepts and issues which we consider to be relevant to a professional HPC practitioner. They will also encounter the various actors (organisations, communities) which make up the HPC Ecosystem. Opportunities to experiment with some of the technologies will be provided via lab exercises. To give students some hands-on experience applying some of the concepts of the course we will make use of online interactive case-study material. On completion of the course, students will have an overview of the current place of HPC in the world, and how it is used. They will also have gained in-depth knowledge of the topical challenge of reaching Exascale levels of computing performance.

The course will comprise the following elements:

1.Guest Lectures (5), from Vendors, HPC Researchers and Users
2.EPCC Core Sessions, covering the following topics:
3.Trends and demographics in HPC
4.HPC vendors
5.HPC users and their requirements
6.Procuring an HPC system
7.HPC in Europe
8.Exascale computing
9.Grid and cloud computing
10.Data-intensive computing

Most topics will be delivered primarily by lecture,supported by tutored practical exercises where appropriate.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: HPC Architectures (PGPH11080) AND Message-Passing Programming (PGPH11078) AND Threaded Programming (PGPH11077)

7.Assess the importance of various proposed solutions to the Exascale challenge
