Course descriptionThis is a synoptic paper testing problem solving abilities. Students are expected to analyse and solve problems, which may be unseen, utilising existing Physics knowledge.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Physics Skills (MPhys 4) (PHYS11017) OR Physics Skills (MPhys 5) (PHYS11018)
Other requirements Available only to those students enrolled on single Honours BSc programmes offered by the School of Physics & Astronomy.
At least 80 credit points accrued in courses of SCQF Level 9 or 10 drawn from Schedule Q.

Students should be able to :
1) Identify and apply the physical concepts / laws needed to analyse and solve the problem;
2) Make appropriate assumptions, qualifications or order of magnitude estimates in order to solve open-ended problems;
3) Be able to graph or sketch a visual representation of a property or observable quantity appropriate to the problem at hand;
4) Be able to comment on or assess the implications of the solution they have proposed to a particular problem;
5) Be able to solve physics problems by mathematical or any other valid reasoning.
