Course descriptionThis course will examine how sessile plants that cannot escape hostile conditions cope with their ever-changing environment. This course is broadly divided in three interconnected topics: First, we will scrutinize the molecular mechanisms of the clock gene circuit in plants, and evidence for its physiological importance in controlling plant signalling, growth, and seasonal reproduction - hence also harvest schedules. Second, we will examine the relevance of light signalling to plant development and survival, the molecular and cellular mechanisms of light perception, environmental signal integration and the application of knowledge to crop development. Finally, we will investigate how environmental stress cues are sensed, lead to dramatic reprogramming of the cellular transcriptome, and are fine-tuned to ultimately produce an appropriate response that provides resistance or tolerance to the stress encountered.
