Course descriptionAn examination of problems and ambiguities associated with the category "Hindu" in relation to various kinds of diversity and dissent in Indian religious traditions and modern attempts to reform and homogenise around an entity called "Hinduism".
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Religion 1A: Religion in the Contemporary World: Judaism, Christianity and Islam (REST08006) AND Religion 1B: Religion in the Contemporary World: Indigenous Religions and the Religions of Asia (REST08005)

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 3 Divinity/Religious Studies courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1) An understanding of various kinds of diversity and dissent within 'Hindu' traditions, and the differing ways these are articulated.
2) Engagement with the secondary sources and scholarly debates on the relevant issues.
3) An ability to critically appraise the use of terms such as 'Hinduism' and 'Hindutva' in academic and popular understanding.
4) An ability to analyse 'Western' influences on modern understandings of 'Hinduism'.
