Course descriptionThis course offers a survey of representative texts from the Qur'an together with discussion of the history of the interpretation of the Qur'an in both the classical and the contemporary periods.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Religion 1A: Religion in the Contemporary World: Judaism, Christianity and Islam (REST08006) OR Introduction to Islam (IMES08032) OR Islamic History: From the Origins of Islam to the Age of Suleyman the Magnificent (IMES08035)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will
* have explored a number of key texts in the Qur'an and have obtained an overview of its developing themes from Meccan to Medinan periods;
* be familiar with a range of types of Qur'anic texts, their various styles and themes;
* have learnt about the place of the Qur'an in Muslim life and will have studied the different approaches to the interpretation of the Qur'an of a range of Muslim and western scholars;
* have explored some of the issues in the interface between Islam and other faiths, especially Christianity.
Assessment Information
5% - General class participation;
10% - Essay 1 (1,000 words);
25% - Essay 2 (2,000 words);
60% - Degree examination.
