| Course description | This course explores the meaning and place of religion in the daily life of practitioners of the major faiths which now compose the diverse picture of religious life in Scotland. The emphasis is ethnological, with the main focus on contemporary religious practice and its antecedents and the response of the individual - singly or in groups - to the priorities of faith and belief. There are opportunities to visit places of worship and to meet representatives of various faith communities. A field trip including a visit to the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art in Glasgow will take place. Continuous assessment takes the form of an interview, with the findings summarised in an assessed oral presentation and submitted as an essay (3,000 words). Work submitted for continuous assessment constitutes 50% of the final mark. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| The Intended Learning Outcomes of this course are the development of a sound methodology for the collection and analysis of religious data in the context of individual expressions of faith, and an accompanying understanding of a range of critical and theoretical approaches to the study of religion from an ethnological perspective. Students are encouraged to explore comparative material from other European countries with a similar religious profile to that of Scotland past and present. |

| 50% coursework: 1 essay (interview-based) 35%, 1 assessed oral presentation of interview findings 15%; 50% final exam. |
