Course descriptionThe course looks at the social context of education - how society influences educational experiences and attainment. Examples are drawn from university, school, parental education at home and nurseries, and mainly from Scotland, England and the USA. The course interprets evidence about the relevance of the social context in the light of three rival claims: that education reproduces existing social structures, that it can reform these, or that it can revolutionise them. There is full discussion of the relationship between education and social inequality, in particular social class, gender, ethnicity and religion. There is an assessment of the role of education in relation to culture, including national identity and the acquisition of ideas of morality. There will be a consideration of how higher education may be changing as it moves to a mass system, and there is an account of the social context of educational policy making, and of the social influences on recruitment to various branches of the teaching professions.
