Course descriptionThe work of this course intends to develop students' thinking and understanding of the issues facing the aspiring sports coach and, in particular, their potential involvement with school aged performers. The content is set in the current context of sports development in the UK and the policy statements that are explicitly linking the development of school sport to either teachers and/or other leaders. The work requires students to link categories of information and content to help explain the sort of coaching practice that can positively promote sport with children. Depending on the student enrolement, practical coaching time will be incorporated into the time allocated to the course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course students will be able to:
-Describe and discuss the conceptual and contextual difference between teaching and coaching, and, between physical education and sport
-Examine the sorts of research that can help explain the ways in which children perform and participate in sport
-Deliberate and express a considered view on the ways in which sports coaches should practice their profession in the light of current developments
-Link the knowledge gained through the module to a NGB Coaching Award Scheme and to articulate a considered view on how coaching sessions should be organised.
