Course descriptionThis course offers the opportunity for sustained critical engagement with Friedrich Schleiermacher's The Christian Faith, one of the landmark works of nineteenth-century theology. The course will proceed carefully through this text, exploring its methodology and investigating a range of theological loci en route. At each stage, the course seeks to promote a critical yet constructive dialogue between Schleiermacher and alternative theological positions.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, a student will have:

1) achieved a clear understanding of the overall structure of Schleiermacher's The Christian Faith and of its particular methodology;

2) gained a detailed knowledge of selected doctrinal loci as treated in The Christian Faith, along with their wider implications;

3) enhanced their critical ability to engage and evaluate the selected readings in the course of preparing for and participating in seminars;

4) developed their skills in both presentation and writing tasks in the course of the seminar discussions and the course assignment.
Assessment Information
The assessment will be based on an essay of 3.000-4.000 words.
