Course descriptionThis course will cover the practical management of diseases of wildlife, the implications of wildlife population structure and pathogen transmission rates and routes, and options for the control of disease.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Discuss the complexities of wildlife disease management, including implications for domestic animal and human health, and identify the major channels of communication about wildlife disease
2. Know the principles of modelling disease dynamics and management scenarios
Discuss the methods available for controlling disease in wildlife

3. Apply risk assessment and contingency planning for introduction of exotic disease
4. Describe the principles of disease management in endangered wild animals
5. Discuss the necessity and limitations of wildlife disease surveillance and monitoring

100% in-course assessment, which will comprise two assessments each worth 50 % of the final course mark

Syllabus An understanding of pathological processes
An understanding of different disease agents
A knowledge of public health including an understanding of how to prevent transmission of disease between animals and man
A knowledge of epidemiology, pathogenesis, therapies and control measures relating to animal disease and the practical skills to apply that knowledge
Problem solving abilities
A good professional attitude and a high standard of professional behaviour
Knowledge and understanding of the relationship between veterinary science, medical science and other biosciences
Advise on animal management, welfare and ethics and understand the importance of animal health economics in the context of acceptable animal welfare
