| Course description | This course examines selected historical and contemporary developments in architectural design theory from a critical perspective. By situating their emergence within larger intellectual currents, it demonstrates architectural design theory's relationship with other areas of culture and provides students with an expanded interpretive framework through which to understand architectural production. The sequence of lectures around which the module is structured is thematically organised, taking up by turn theories of power, the philosophy of technology, the politics of domination, the production of space, history as disjunction, gender issues, discourses of the unconscious, cyberspace, theories of interpretation,
and deconstruction.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Knowledge of contemporary design theories and the ways in which they can inform specific approaches to, and practices of, architectural design.
2. Ability to demonstrate and analyse through careful argument how architectural production fits within wider philosophical, historical, social, political and economic discourses.
3. Ability to research issues in architectural theory, to critically reflect upon them, and to organise and present those reflections in the format of scholarly writing. |
