Course descriptionThe course is divided into four sections which explore different aspects of architecture and sustainability through an architectural perspective.

Principles of Sustainable Development
Linear vs. Cyclical development, historical context and sustainability. Architectural expression and quantitative value.

The Sustainable City
Course content: Ecological footprint of cities. Density and sustainability. Consumption systems, the sustainable landscape.

The Sustainable Neighbourhood
Diversity of use and environmental outcomes. Closed environmental systems and their application to neighbourhoods. Microclimate and urban design as an ecological generator.The Sustainable Building
Environmental construction techniques, 'healthy' buildings human comfort and energy use in the built envelope.

Embracing Growth
The effect of urbanisation, industrialisation and globalisation in the developed and developing world. Knowledge of mechanisms to creatively interact with such forces.

Conservation as Regeneration
Current conservation theory, the conservation of urban quarters. Conservation as a means to urban regeneration and sustainability.
