Course description | This course offers an examination of Scandinavian architecture and design between c.1890-1960. Focusing on selected developments in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, it also highlights the significant relationship to German theory and practice of the period. Beginning with a consideration of the legacy of National Romanticism, the course moves on to explore architectural Expressionism, Nordic Classicism, and Scandinavia¿s unique form of architectural modernism known as ¿Functionalism¿ or the ¿Scandinavian synthesis¿. Architects studied include Martin Nyrop, Eliel Saarinen, Kay Fisker, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Alvar Aalto and Arne Jacobsen. Examination of individual buildings and civic planning is combined with a focus on the close relationship between architecture and integrated design that remains such a strong feature of the Nordic countries to this day. |
