Course descriptionThis is a self-directed course, under the supervision of a tutor, taken by students working individually or in small groups. It allows the student to pursue a line of enquiry along an agreed theme related to some aspect of architectural culture: historical, theoretical, historiographical, representational. It will be firmly based on a body of material identified at the beginning of the course. It is envisaged that the students taking this course will have a number of different backgrounds, but primarily in history and architectural design, and the projects will be designed to combine these skills and to produce outputs that allow students to express these strengths.

An ability to analyse buildings and/or urban ensembles using a wide variety of visual media
An ability critically to analyse and combine different sorts of evidence, from archival to material, in support of an argument

The student will produce a project whose form may vary according to the particular project, but may include some of the following:
web site, series of leaflets, exhibition panels, poster, written report. All students will produce a presentation of their work for a project review by their peers and tutors.

Study Pattern This course is largely self-directed, however, it will include an introductory session (2hours) for all students in order to set up the projects, create study groups and agree outputs. Thereafter, students will have access to tutorial advice as required and towards the end of the project. There will be a concluding session of 2-4 hours (depending on student numbers)for project review, involving presentations by all students or groups.
