This module aims to introduce students to a way of considering art objects in a broad visual context where great emphasis will be placed on the ability to draw comparisons, and arrive at personally determined choices and judgements.
Aims of course
1 To develop students understanding of the disparate nature of visual languages, and how these are affected by external agencies of time, space, location, culture etc.
2 To enhance students' confidence in applying a personally framed critique to objects which may be drawn from a wide range of cultural sources
3 To develop students' ability to draw comparisons in an interdisciplinary way so as to understand a cultural object in its contextual framework

Gallery based study day consisting of lecture, discussion, visit and supporting materials.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Show a clear understanding of and an ability to analyse the ways in which art works are produced within a socially, culturally and historically determined framework
2. Demonstrate an ability to describe and analyse using a critical vocabulary informed by an understanding of art theory
3. Demonstrate confidence and fluency in written critical discussion, with confident use of references and quotations |
