Course descriptionA course for beginners with no previous knowledge of Japanese, designed to introduce the Japanese Language and culture to students in the College of Science and Engineering. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of Japanese.

The examination will consist of a two-hour written paper.

Class Delivery Information IMPORTANT: Students must attend pairs of classes choosing ONE of:

GROUP A: Monday & Tuesday, 14:10-16:00
OR
GROUP B: Monday & Tuesday, 16:10-18:00
OR
GROUP C: Wednesday & Thursday, 16:10-18:00

Any enquiries regarding course enrolment, groups, first meeting, and class venues for each groups etc should be made to the course secretary

Please note: this course will not appear on students' personalised timetable. Group Sign-up sheets will be available on LEARN after the first class meeting. Groups have a limited quota, if a group reaches capacity, you will need to choose another.

Students joining the course after the first class meeting with timetable restrictions on which group they can join must contact the course secretary before enrolling to confirm availability in the required group.

The first class meeting will be Tuesday 17th September at 14:10 in DHT lecture Hall B.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will develop basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. They will acquire knowledge of basic grammatical structures and a vocabulary of approximately 400 high-frequency words and phrases and the 2 basic character sets.

Course work including class participation 50%; degree exam 50%.
