| Course description | A continuation of Japanese 1. Teaching will be aimed at enabling students to speak, read and write Modern Japanese at an upper-elementary / intermediate level.
This course is not available to native or near-native speakers of Japanese, or complete beginners. If in doubt, contact the Course Organiser.
First meeting: Week 1, Monday (16th September), 11:10 - 12:00, @ David Hume Tower 4.01. Placement test and questionnaire for your background of Japanese language studies will be conducted in the first class.
All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students' general academic development. |

6 hour(s) per week for 22 week(s). Plus 1-hour compulsory oral tutorial(Mon 14.10-15.00 / 15.10-16.00 / Tue 10.00-10.50), and an additional Kanji workshop (1 hour per week, Friday 12.10-13.00), which is compulsory for the students who are intending to proceed to MA Honours Japanese / MA Honours Japanese & Linguistics. Otherwise, Kanji workshop is optional.
The essential textbook and workbook will be needed from the second class (Tuesday in the first week), so it is strongly advised to buy them well in advance at JP-Books (http://shop.jpbooks.co.uk/) if this course is compulsory for you (e.g. MA Japanese students). |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Aimed overall proficiency level is Intermediate (low).
2. Speaking: able to handle a variety of straightforward communicative tasks in daily social situations.
3. Listening: able to understand sentence-length utterances in both formal/informal contexts.
4. Reading: With about 300-500 kanji characters in total, students will be able to read semi-authentic Japanese text.
5. Writing: able to write a short text in Japanese such as personal letters/essays, and short descriptions. Students will be able to control more complicated syntax towards the end of the course. |
Assessment Information
Class work (15%): homework, presentations and participation.
Continuous assessment (35%): class tests, quizzes, assignments and a group project.
Degree exam (50%): 3 hour written paper 40% in May diet, Oral 10%. |
