Course descriptionBuilding on the preparatory work done in the third year and the introductory section, plan and bibliography, students will complete an 8,000 to 10,000 word dissertation on their chosen subject. Although regular guidance by the nominated supervisor is accommodated for as an integral part of this study, students are expected to demonstrate a high degree of independence in their approach to their topic.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to develop the student's abilities in the following areas:
1) Independent study
2) Synthesis and analysis of materials from different sources
3) Formal academic writing
Assessment Information
The 8,000-10,000 word dissertation will be the basis for the summative assessment of the 20 credits taken for this course plus the 20 credits taken for the dissertation in year 2 (see Japanese 3 Dissertation [preparation].)
