Course description | The course focuses on the issues raised by historical events and processes in modern Japan, from the mid-19th century to the present day. A thematic approach is adopted and topics pertinent to the history and culture of modern Japan will be examined. Where appropriate, the pre-modern background will be examined.
All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students' general academic development. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to deepen students' understanding of issues in Japanese history and to develop their skills in the use of library resources (both conventional and electronic), the collating and synthesis of materials, oral presentation, discussion on prescribed themes, and academic writing. |

Presentation on an approved topic; one essay (3,500 words); one two-hour summative examination in the May Diet. |
