Course descriptionThe first canon of Modern Chinese literature was established in China as the result of a process of long debates about how to renew the old literary tradition. The course will deal with notions and concepts of Chinese modern literature, their evolution and different assessment in modern China. It will also discuss different approaches of literary criticism of Chinese literary text in China and Western academic discourses, identify major contested concepts and discuss their relevance. As the writing of literary histories was as well a new phenomenon of the 20th century, we will proceed to discuss its origins, development and main characteristics. We will on one hand discuss the transformation of discursive practices from the late Qing into the PRC and contemporary China. Analysis and classification of standard literary accounts according to their ideological premises will enable a critical approach to secondary literary sources.
