Course descriptionThe course charts the development of the genre of heroic ballads from the Classical period to the 20th century. A key aspect of the course is the translation and discussion of selected primary texts representative of the genre. In addition, the course examines the characteristics of, and problems associated with, written and oral transmission through the appropriate methodological approaches and techniques of analysis relevant to different aspects of the field of study. The subject's links within the wider field of Gaelic and Irish literature will lead to a more detailed understanding of the wider cultural and literary environment. Although some Irish material will be dealt with, the focus of the course will lie on the Scottish Gaelic tradition. The course is taught through the medium of Gaelic.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Gaelic 1A (CELT08004) OR Gaelic 1B (CELT08005) AND Gaelic 2A (CELT08006) OR Gaelic 2B (CELT08007)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course objectives are the development of a sound knowledge of the ballad genre, its development, and its themes in the Irish and Scottish Gaelic contexts. This will involve an understanding of the processes of oral and written transmission and of the range of the available textual material as well as an awareness of the place and connections of the ballads within the wider field of Gaelic literature.
Assessment Information
50% of the mark will be based on internally assessed course work (essay/project and presentation) and 50% on the degree examination.
