Course descriptionThe course is designed to provide an introduction to the key chemical principles underpinning many biological processes. The main themes addressed by the course are the chemistry of biologically important functional groups; biological catalysis (enzyme kinetics - principles and examples); bioenergetics, bioelectrochemistry and metabolic reactions (the kinds of reactions catalysed by enzymes with extensive reference made to energetics and biocatalysis). Standard first course (usually with Biological Chemistry 1A (CHE-1-BC1A) or Introductory Chemistry of Biology 1 (CHE-1-ICB)) for students of Biological Sciences and other students requiring only one year of chemistry or intending to proceed to Chemistry for Life Sciences 2 (CHE-2-CLS).

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Chemistry 1B (CHEM08017)
Other requirements Students MUST have passed: Biological Chemistry 1A (CHEM08022) OR Introductory Chemistry for Biologists (CHEM07001); Or by permission of the Head of School of Chemistry.
Additional Costs Purchase of a laboratory coat.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. describe and explain the principles of organic reaction mechanisms and their application to simple metabolic pathways
2. describe the basic principles of kinetics, the catalytic role of enzymes, bioenergetics, ionic solutions and reduction-oxidation
3. use their knowledge to explain observations and solve problems associated with the material covered in the course
4. use laboratory equipment in a safe manner in order to measure physical quantities, and to interpret and analyse the results
5. write clear, succinct laboratory reports
