Course descriptionThis course will train students in the basic tools of Statistics for Finance. "Statistics for Finance" builds on such topics as elementary probability, simple sampling theory and statistical inference. Moments, Quantiles and distributions are introduced.
Lectures are supported by weekly problem solving classes.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the course students will be able to:
* Define and illustrate the concepts of probability, random variables, point estimation, interval estimation, hypothesis testing and inference.
* Link theory with empirical applications.
* Understand the importance of assumptions in statistics/econometrics.
* Have a strong enough understanding of the introductory material covered in the course to proceed to the more advanted techniques to be covered in subsequent classes.

Intellectual Skills and Personal Development
The course will develop analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills.

Subject Specific Skills:
Students will gain an ability to understand and use statistics notation and theory to solve a wide range of problems in Finance.
Assessment Information
An examination counts for 70% of the grade. The remaining 30% is based on a mid-term quiz.
