Course descriptionTo explore the varied theoretical and conceptual meanings of Leadership. To critically assess these meanings in a variety of individual environmental, sector and organisational contexts. To understand and study the links between the ideas and practices involved in leadership with the ideas and professional practice involved in HRM. In particular, to analyse how management development practices effect leadership. To debate and critically evaluate the components and nature of leadership effectiveness. To introduce students to a range of techniques, practices and skills used to understand the contingent nature of leadership.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:

On completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. Describe and discuss the major theoretical and conceptual approaches concerning leadership in organisations.
2. Understand how these approaches may vary according to a range of contingent factors.
3. Relate the key debates about leadership to the broader debates involved in contemporary Human Resource Management.
4. Relate to all of these areas to the specific field of Management Development.

On completion of the course the student should be able to:-
1. Identify and source key texts and written sources.
2. Summarise theoretical debates.
3. Synthesise the results of empirical research.
4. Communicate ideas to others.

On completion of the course the student should be able to:-
1. To locate a critical analysis of leadership within the functions of HRM practice.
2. To assess the consequences within organisations of different types of leadership and associated contingencies.
3. Work collaboratively, ethically and effectively towards the personal and professional development of good leadership practice.

On completion of the course the student should be able to:-
1. Demonstrate their awareness and understanding of complex debates.
2. Present a consistent and well structure account of these debates via an assessment.
3. Discuss the subject among peers, both communicating their own ideas and critically assessing the ideas of others.

On completion of the course the student should be able to:-
1. Understand, analyse and critically evaluate contemporary organisations and their principal environments.
2. Understand, analyse and critically evaluate the managerial and business environment within which HR professionals work.
3. Understand, analyse and critically evaluate how organisational and HR strategies are shaped by and developed in response to internal and external environmental factors.
