Course descriptionThis interdisciplinary course will provide a systematic and critical introduction to a range of arts-informed methods that are being used across the social sciences. It will introduce students to various theoretical foundations for this type of work and the specific issues that may arise through the use of arts-informed methods, including ethical issues and questions around analysing and presenting the resulting data. This course will provide students with hands-on experience in their use.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. * Critically evaluate the growing range of ways in which social scientists have made use of arts-informed practices in their research
2. * make an informed choice as to which (if any) arts-informed methods are appropriate to their ontological orientation and research question
3. * understand the epistemological advantages and disadvantages offered by arts-informed methods
4. * anticipate and address ethical and logistical issues that can arise in undertaking this kind of research
5. * analyse the debates surrounding the use of arts-informed methods in social science research and make informed contributions to them.
Assessment Information
Assessment will have two components. The first component will be a self-, peer- and tutor-assessed presentation that uses an arts-informed method to communicate a key learning from the course (40%). The second component will be a 3,000 word essay handed in at the end of semester, which draws critically on relevant literature to make a proposal for using a particular arts-informed method to address a specific research question of the student's choosing. The paper needs to include a discussion of the limitations of this method, the possible logistical and ethical issues that might arise, and ways in which the student proposes to deal with these issues (60%).
