| Course description | This course provides an advanced examination of the use of creative therapies with children and young people. Students will develop their theoretical understanding of the field as well as their therapeutic skills of identifying, implementing and evaluating different practices of listening to children and young people. Sessions will cover a variety of creative approaches for working therapeutically with children and young people, namely: Sand Tray Work, Play Therapy, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Dance and Movement Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Storytelling. Students are expected to develop an advanced understanding of the underlying theoretical concepts and are required to engage with the approaches in a practical and interactive way, involving exercises and role play. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. an awareness of the social construction of childhood and the capacity to critically appraise how theoretical concepts inform the perception of and communication with children and young people.
2. an advanced theoretical understanding of children and young people's social, emotional and cognitive development and its relevance for the therapeutic practice with children and young people.
3. the capacity to identify, implement and evaluate appropriate ways of listening practice based on the advanced understanding of relevant theoretical concepts drawing on a range of creative therapies. |
Assessment Information
| One 4,000 word essay analysing one of the creative therapy approaches introduced in the course. Students will critically reflect on the practice theme, integrating relevant research and literature, and drawing on their own therapeutic practice or experience on the course, as relevant. |
