Indicative course content
This course introduces you to the defining characteristics and events of modernity and postmodernity and to the key critical concepts of modernism and postmodernism by which we comprehend these ideas. It identifies and engages with the significant critical and aesthetic debates and creative practices that have shaped visual culture since the late nineteenth century.

Aims of course
1 To enable you to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of visual culture since the late nineteenth century.
2 To help you develop competence, imagination and understanding when applying key critical concepts relevant to the analysis and production of visual culture.
3 To introduce key critical concepts that will establish a foundation for the theoretical development of your studio practice.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. RESEARCH: Research and show a detailed knowledge of a range of critical and creative approaches using a variety of appropriate tools.
2. ANALYSE: Demonstrate an applied knowledge of critical and creative developments both in your field and in relation to their wider cultural influence.
3. COMMUNICATE: Show initiative in managing your work and convey creative ideas in a range of imaginatively structured and coherent forms.
