Course descriptionThe proposal is to offer a new 10pt course which is an expanded version of the present GPG Spain trip so as to integrate additional days on the regional structure, the metamorphic basement, ductile deformation, volcanic and surface processes. These would then place the present soft-rock components of the course into an integrative field programme where they appreciate how the different components of the system fit together. This couse would be offered to GPG students as an alternative to the combination of 1 week in Spain and 1 week in Mull/Kinlochleven. It would comprise of 10 days of field work.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Completion of 2nd year in Geology/Physical Geography is required.
Additional Costs The cost of the fieldtrip in 2013/14 was £230.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
In addition to the 7 days in Spain, the 3.5 days will be made up of:
One day traversing the Sierra de Alhamilla (high grade metamorphic basement capped by mylonities). This would require a structural cross-section to be constructed integrating measurements of multiple ductile fabrics.
One day on volcanism - probably Cabo de Gata volcanics with spectacular adnesite and ignimbrite volcanism - this woul integrate mapping of the complexity of successive volcanic flows.
One day on modern surface processes (fluvial response to base-level change and alluvial fac sedimentation). Integration of DEM generated from 'Geology and Landscapes; course combined with surveying using laser range finders.
Half day on teh Sierra de los Filabres basement with faulted contact into the sedimentary basins. This would comprise a structural exercise measuring linear fabrics on steep fault margins, and looking at rotation of strata in the fault system.
It would also replace one of the current days with an additional day on the surface processes to enable them to do a 3 day exerceise and report on this component.
Assessment Information
Students will construct a regional cross section through basement and a sedimentary basin iwth additional thermochronological data as the bais for a report that will test alternative models for the evolution of the area. (50%)
Field notebooks (25%)
Three days surface process exercise will be assessed by handin in a synthesis of their analyses when in the field. (25%)
Special Arrangements
Students who are immobile will be asked to carry out an independant research porject using remotely sensed data and geologic maps with hand specimens.
