Course descriptionThis optional half course is intended to offer students the opportunity to undertake a small scale research or study project, focuses on a topic of the individual student's choosing. It will be expected that projects are demonstrably relevant to the professional field of community education, broadly understood. This half course will normally only be available to students in the third year of the degree programme. It is an appropriate choice both for students planning to proceed to Honours and for students who plan to graduate with an Ordinary degree but nevertheless wish to take the opportunity to undertake independent work. Independent learning will involve a written contract through which the department and the student will agree the aims, activities, assessment criteria and assessment procedures for the course.

On completion of this course students will have:
-Identified and set limits on a selected study topic
-Recognised the importance of clear focus and well chosen research questions
-Undertaken an independent literature review
-Considered the utility of different investigative strategies
-Developed an analytical framework
-Explored a substantive topic in depth and detail
- Produced an appropriate output to demonstrate both process and findings
Assessment Information
While no specific form of evidence is specified for assessment it will be equivalent in length and scope to a 2-3000 word paper.
