| Course description | The generic courses in years two and three of the BEd Primary Programme introduced students to the concept of ?creativity= before developing focus on aesthetic attitudes, values and judgements. This option will further develop students= abilities to identify the possibilities for ?learning in= Art and Design (e.g. visual and tactile learning as well as problem solving) and ?learning through= Art and Design (e.g. Art and the Environment, Art and Language, Art and ICT). The teaching approaches adopted in the option will encourage ?layered learning= (Curriculum for Excellence, 2005). Approaches will comprise lectures, seminars and discursive workshops. In these workshops students will use their developing understanding of theory and pedagogical practices to accommodate new principles and knowledge. Students will be encouraged to draw on the specialist support provided by outside bodies and agencies. Specifically, the Playfair Link Education Facilities at the National Gallery and the Royal Museum of Scotland will be used. No costs to students or the University are anticipated. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this option students will demonstrate:
! informed understanding of how Art and Design, through creativity, aesthetics and value judgement, develop cognitive ability
! understanding of the complex interaction between the role of Art and Design and other curricular areas
! ability to plan for learning based on understanding of pedagogy and policy
! ability to identify, select and critically evaluate educational sources in the community |
Assessment Information
The option will be assessed in two parts:
Part 1: A 3000 word essay (80% weighting) designed to measure the extent and depth of the students knowledge and understanding of the key principles involved within the course. This assignment should integrate theory and practice, drawing on the study of learning in and through Art & Design. Part 2: The Learning Journal (20% weighting) should take the form of a diary or portfolio which will act as a record of the students knowledge with analysis and reflection on each weekly experience. Students will be encouraged to give an appraisal of both the theoretical and practical aspects of the course and they should resource support documentation to show extensions to the issues and concepts raised. The assessment of the journal will look at content, analysis, reflection and research.
