Course descriptionA range of range of health issues of relevance to community educators will be introduced. There will be a focus on the concept of health as a personal, social and professional concern. Particular attention will be paid to health inequalities and the contested explanations for their origins. The impact of gender, 'race', social class, disability and other structural factors on health will be considered. Students will investigate a health issue of their choice and present their findings to the class.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Concepts and Controversies in Community Education (EDUA08064)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completing this course students will be able to:
- Exhibit critical awareness of a range of definitions of health and their relevance to their personal, social and professional concerns.
- Identify and discuss a variety of models of the determinants of health inequalities.
- Show the implications of a community development model of health for practice.
Assessment Information
Students will be provided with a range of questions / topics on which to write paper of 3000 words. This task will be undertaken independently as a self-study task and submitted at the end of the semester in which the course is taught
