Course descriptionResistance training is a cornerstone of most sports training programmes thus adequate knowledge of resistance training principles as well as the practical aspects of resistance training is paramount for a wide range of professionals. This module is concerned with improvement of athletic performance through resistance training. The course includes a brief overview of various biochemical and physiological systems and 1) provides a comprehensive comparative overview of the biochemical, biomechanical and physiological responses and adaptations to resistive training 2) provides a comprehensive study of training theory and methodologies with emphasis on enhancement of maximum strength, power and high intensity exercise endurance, and 3) provides practical, hands-on experience with various resistance training exercises and techniques.

Learning outcomes will be achieved by methods including lectures, demonstrations, workshops and directed reading.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Evaluate basic physiological and biomechanical information related to the understanding of strength power and high intensity exercise endurance performance.
2. Describe both low and high level strength power and high intensity exercise endurance performance.
3. Compare the training adaptations related to resistance training to those of typical aerobic conditioning or combination training.
4. Relate information concerning training concepts leading to the construction of rational training protocols for enhancing strength power high intensity exercise endurance for various types of athletes and fitness programs.
Assessment Information
Assessment will include a term paper on a topic approved by the module co-ordinator. Assignment - 4000 words.
