| Course description | Students undertake a work placement in an organisation for a minimum time period of 20-24 days. Students can undertake the placement as a supervised work project in their own place of work. During placement the student will work on a planned project, whilst being supervised by a University tutor and workplace supervisor/mentor. The student is required to provide two pieces of work for assessment - a final report on the project and an analytical report reflecting their learning from the project.
This course should enable students to make connections between academic theory, professional practice and the student's own professional development, with an emphasis on two key aspects of learning - application of theory and analysis of practice. (The learning facilitated by this experience will be characterised by the same rigour and standards as a conventional taught programme.) |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The placement addresses specific and general learning outcomes. The learning outcomes specific to students in individual placements should be outlined in the learning agreement.
The general learning outcomes are detailed below:
Upon completion of this placement (WBL course), participants will be required to demonstrate that they are able to:
1. Engage in critical discussion of the nature of their own and others' professionalism, of professional values and of the relationship between enquiry, relevant theory and professional practice.
2. Articulate personal learning needs within a supervisory relationship and within a learning agreement.
3. Analyse professional values and standards.
4. Evaluate approaches to management of training and development in the context of the organisation in which the placement occurred.
5. Plan, implement and evaluate project work with appropriate support.
6. Be aware of the impact of changing social and cultural contexts on the tasks undertaken by training and dev |
Assessment Information
Assessment must relate to the learning outcomes specified in the learning agreement and be consistent with the programme requirements.
Material to be submitted for assessment -
1. The student submits an assignment giving evidence in relation to the placement organisation, project information and a report offering a critical reflection on the learning derived from carrying out the project.
2. The final report from the workplace-based supervisor/mentor.
[The combined word length should be approximately 4,000 words. The mentor report should be approximately 1,000 words.
The assignment and report from the supervisor/mentor must be submitted within 3 weeks following the completion of the placement for full-time students (8 weeks for part-time students). |
